How to Build Emotional Self-Reliance, Take 2
April 8th's council meeting was a continuation of the conversation from the March council meeting. Here are some of the things discussed:
Ministering to Others:
In our callings and relationships, those we care for will have problems and struggles. While it's important to empathize and to "follow the Spirit and minister as prompted," we must remember that the "Lord is not removing their problems and we shouldn't try to, either."
"Taking on their problems is almost intruding on their spiritual growth," and we "rob them of valuable experiences when we transfer their responsibility to ourselves."
It's also important to remember to monitor our own energy reserves, and avoid becoming so emotionally drained that it affects our families and lives. Sister Uber's mission president's strategy was to, "listen and try to give as much help as [he could] and then...ask the Lord to take the burden (meaning the emotional burden) off [his] shoulders."
Callings/Commitments:
"...revelation is a two-way street. We should not be accepting callings without praying and asking Heavenly Father for our own spiritual confirmation." As we do this, we need to make sure we're being honest with ourselves and not just finding a reason to avoid moving out of our comfort zones.
"...when we are honest with the Lord, [He] will let us know through revelation whether this calling is right." Sometimes a calling that seems to be a large burden on our time is one that will bless us the most.
"Please pray about your callings and then when the Spirit gives you that sweet push, have the faith to accept that calling even if you are scared."
Rejuvenating Ourselves:
It's also important to identify the things we can do to "refill our tanks." We should set boundaries, even with our families, to avoid running out of energy (emotionally or physically). This lets others know that we are important, too.'
Most Important: "Our relationship with our Savior and making sure we read our scriptures, [and our] relationship with [ourselves]."
LIST OF QUESTIONS:
Continue to conversation! What do you think of the following?
*How do we keep from exhausting ourselves spiritually and emotionally, trying to help?
*How to help others become self reliant?
*How to support without "over fixing'?
*How can we help others rely on the Savior for help?
