R.S. Lesson: April 29, 2018

Sister Shae taught today’s awesome lesson on the Sabbath Day. We had a lively discussion. Here are some of the things we talked about, with scriptures and quotes (or paraphrased quotes, anyway) from the meeting. I'm going to put the meeting quotes in blue, to to avoid confusion.

We read from the Bible Dictionary, which says a lot about the Sabbath. Here’s just a little of it:
“The Sabbath was a holy day before the giving of the law, even from the earliest times…an eternal principle [that] would have existed from the days of Adam, whenever the gospel was on the earth among men.”
The Sabbath was “instituted to commemorate God’s seventh day of rest at the Creation, and…the redemption from Egyptian bondage.”
“The existence of a weekly holy day is a most important safeguard; it leaves a constant reminder to the individual of his need for spiritual sustenance and his duty before God, and serves as a witness to the world that there is such a thing as revealed religion.”

We may need to get closer to the Spirit to appreciate the Sabbath Day.

Heavenly Father says, "keep the Sabbath Day holy," but then it’s between Him and your family.

“Why is Sabbath observance essential?”

It’s really important to pause. It’s really important to sit and think and ponder. What happens when we pause can be life-changing. The Spirit is right there.

It’s important to take the Sabbath to remember who we are in God’s eyes.

Since we owe everything to him, we should be more than willing to give him one day. He makes it all possible for us.

“What can we do?”

One sister plans her Sunday based on how the week has gone. What do we need as a family?

Another sister saves things during the week that would be good to do on Sunday.

It’s a day of doing good.

Reflect and Reset

Do something that’s good for my soul and spirit.

Genealogy needs to be done and it takes time, so that’s a good activity for Sunday. Even writing down things from your life to pass on.

The Sabbath Day can be a delight. God has given this to us as a gift because He knows we need it.

Questions for discussion:

What are some of your "go-to" Sunday activities?

If you have a situation that makes it difficult to observe a non-traditional Sabbath (work, etc.), what are some strategies you've used to have your "day of rest?"
